Chapter Seven

“It isn’t as terrible as she makes it out to be,” Grace said, her pale blue eyes shining up at me, gathering the faint light from the stars and coals, “but as I’ve told you before, it was no tale of love.”

“You tell me what you want, when you’re comfortable saying it,” I said, reaching around her shoulders and hugging her close, “I’ll be grateful for what you can offer me, and patient for what you can’t, yet.”

“How did we get so lucky, that a man like you found and loves us?”

“You found me,” I said, holding her close, “and there’s never been a luckier man.”

“Hush you,” she said, swatting my knee with one hand before crossing her arms beneath her massive bosom and leaning her head back against my thigh. “and listen close while I tell you of a young woman lost in a big city, with nothing more to her name than the wits in her skull and a dress to make men weep.”

“You’ve more going on that that,” I breathed, my hand reaching around to cup the side of one massive breast, “A damn sight more.”

“I’m not speaking of myself, thank you very much,” she said with a joking acerbic attitude, her lips were frowning but she hadn’t moved away from my touch, instead pressing into my hand and shivering slightly when I found her large nipple and rolled the soft flesh beneath thumb and forefinger, loving the feel as it hardened.

“And quit that for… mhmm… now,” she peeked over quickly and saw the girls were inside their tent, the opening facing away from us, “There will be time for that later… if you’re quiet.”

I grinned back, nodding and released her breast, feeling an ache of sadness at the loss of contact but happy to see it reflected in her eyes too. Turning so her back was against the inside of my leg, she wrapped her arms around her knees and continued her tale. As she spoke my hand wandered back, this time to safer territory as I rubbed the muscles of her neck and let my fingers slide into her thick hair.

“The woman I spoke of was Isla Rothschild and she’d arrived in Manhattan. Within the year she had her own deposit agency, facilitating the city’s municipal workers, and from there her reach only grew.”

Her story wasn’t at all what I was expecting, but it drew me in, if for no other reason than because it was a window into this gorgeous woman’s deep and vibrant background.

“There’s something you need to know about high finance. You see, like most of the world it’s a male-dominated profession, with few women ever given an opportunity. However, if one manages to get a break, then the numbers and returns will determine her fate, not her sex. Banks have lost major trading partners and customers because they fired the person who guaranteed a sizable return every year, simply because they don’t have a penis. They just expect you to pay the woman less, and keep her in the job only until she has a poor quarter.
